| There are some telling signs that America is not only facing an economic bump in the road, but also a slow decline as the world superpower. It could take decades until the world superpower tag is removed or considered irrelevant, but for every-day-living-Americans they see it everyday. The latest prosperity index was recently released and America has fallen to #9. This is not too bad of course but it's also not all that encouraging. America still ranks #1 in 'Entrepreneurship & Innovation' and #2 in 'Democratic Institutions' but has fallen back to #27 in 'health'.

The last rating is not surprising given all the controversy regarding Health Care. What has been noticeable in all the hoopla is the mistrust shown by the public towards the government and the Health Care providers. The swine flu issue is one that is being pushed hard by the media and the health care industry is banking off of it. This is another example of a problem blow out-of-proportion, even thought this flu has killed over 1000 Americans thus far.
The more the press discusses H1N1 the more paranoid people are getting. First you have a segment of the population truly concerned that the swine flu is going to be what ends their lives. They carry santizers and are generally a step away for quarantining any public space they are going to go. Another segment of the population is suspicious of the motives of the goverment and health care industries. They think that this is a corporate agenda and much ado about nothing. Then, you have everyone in between. For the most part, those unsure of what to think are going to opt to stay away from getting the vaccine. Simply put, their skepticism is enough for them to just stay at home and not waste their time.
For the ultimate skeptics, they point to government coverups of the past and a capitalistic agends. After all, asbestos was used by the government up until the late 1970's. This lead to many veterans and U.S. citizens getting a deadly cancer called mesothelioma. In the 1970's there was also a swine flu outbreak and vaccination that basically failed in a variety of ways.
Of course, the conspiracy theories are abundant and also show the discourse that exists from those living outside of Washington D.C. The 9-11 conspiracy theorists are not ready to give up their fight and the birthers will never let that issue die. In some, nothing is being accepted at face value these days. This can be good for public awareness but I'm not so sure it's good for America. |
