| Text "Haiti" to the number 90999 and donate $10 to the Red Cross. The donations are being managed by mGive, a foundation established in 2005. So far, the foundation, which has partnered with the State Department and the Red Cross, has raised nearly 5 million dollars and counting, according to a news report from the Associated Press.
In the last year, text messaging, Twitter and other social networking efforts have emerged as quick and easy ways to donate money for or to promote charitable causes. Setting up such a system is typically simple and sometimes free. And using it requires very little effort.
Remember the days of the Telethon when you had to call a number and be put on hold? That approach seems ancient. Now you just text a phrase and click "send." What could be easier?
